The work of Len Schmidt

This SR-71 was recently built by IPMS Regina’s very own Len Schmidt. The kit is Revell’s 1/72 version. Len decided to mount the ramjet unit onboard to give the model a more unusual look. The aircraft was named “Habu” after the black venomous snakes that inhabit the island of Okinawa where some SR-71’s were stationed. The pilots were nicknamed “Habu” as well, by the locals. This particular SR-71 was done in CIA markings (or lack thereof). Absent are the national insignia and a few of the data placards.

As more information about the YF-12, SR-71 and various associated projects are declassified and made available to the public, the more amazed I am about this aircraft’s missions, capability, and its pilot’s careers.
