Virginia pilot boats were used extensively on the Chesapeake and evolved into the famed Baltimore clippers.

In working with wood, nothing can fill a job well done, not much painting to do, and here it shows the good finish
I think that painting a wooden ship is sacrilege.
Staining the wood is OK though as long as one still sees the grain.
